About

The Big Green Hike is a nationwide sponsored walk that anyone can take part in, no matter where they live.

Many of Britain's best-loved nature and environmental charities are joining voices to encourage us all to walk on 6-7th April 2024 to raise money for the green stuff.

You can pick the environmental cause you want to fundraise for. Each of the Big Green Hike partner organisations have unique charitable objectives, but they share the same overall goal: to protect and restore our natural environment.

1.Save The Date

Pop 6-7th April 2023 in your diary, then ring up your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours and ask them to do the same!

Hiking Responsibly

At the Big Green Hike we encourage all participants to hike responsibly and follow all relevant legislation while taking part. This includes adhering to

the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 in England and Wales and

the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 in Scotland.

By following these laws, you will help to protect the natural environment and ensure that local communities and landowners are respected. This will also ensure that your hike runs smoothly and that all participants have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a great time hiking for nature.

FAQ’s

How can we sign up to become a Big Green Hike charity partner?

Charities can register to be a featured Big Green Hike partner between May-November each year. Featured partners logos are included on the promotional materials and website.

To register for 2025, email biggreenhike@gmail.com with a copy of your logo and URL and we will add you to our partner list for next year.

Can we take part if we aren't a featured charity?

Yes! Don't worry if you missed the registration window - you can still take part in the Big Green Hike. You will need to advise your hikers will need to select 'Other' when choosing a charity in the hiker registration form.

If we sign up as a charity partner, what will be expected of us?

The Big Green Hike doesn't cost you anything; the only requirement is that your organisation is set up on JustGiving (you can do this here for free) so participants can set up fundraising pages.

We also ask for you to promote the event using the videos/stills provided in our media pack across your social media channels to encourage registration on two set dates: the event launch and one month prior to the event. You are welcome to post as much or as little as you’d like, as the more you post the more likely hikers will sign up to hike for your charity.

How do we know if a participant nominates us as their charity of choice?

Providing they have given permission for us to pass on their contact details via the registration form, we will endeavour to provide participant updates on a regular basis.

Does the walk have to take place on exact event dates?

Though we aim for everyone to hike on the same weekend, we understand this isn't always possible. The BGH is designed to be as flexible as possible for participants so, if needed, please feel free to undertake your hike on another date that better suits your availability.

Can I walk with others taking part in the BGH?

The BGH encourages everyone to take part as individuals or as a group and plan a hike suitable to their/their team's abilities and location. Given this degree of flexibility, we don't have control over where individuals/groups plan their hikes but have set up a Facebook group to connect like-minded people who would be interested in walking together.

How do I set up my fundraising account?

For step-by-step instructions showing how to set up your JustGiving page and for additional fundraising tips, please refer to page 2 of the Event Pack
